The Salvation Army in Macon is ready for National Donut Day! This event, which has been held annually since 1938, is a tribute to the ‘donut lassies’ – women who supported courageous soldiers on the front line during World War I.
These ‘donut lassies’ took on the entrusted task of making donuts, aiming to provide the soldiers with a comforting treat that may brighten up their day amidst the dire circumstances. The sweet pastries, reminiscent of home, were a small gesture that left a significant impact.
The tradition carried on, and so, every year the National Donut Day is celebrated. It dates back more than eight decades ago, from the time after the war. It’s commemorative of the services rendered by the ‘donut lassies’ who served at the forefront during tumultuous times.
This year, Macon’s unit of the Salvation Army is all set to continue the tradition. It’s a simple, enjoyable way to remember and honor the courageous actions of those brave women from the past. More information about Macon Donut Day can be found on the Salvation Army’s website here.
