Jenkins High School secures a spot in the semifinals as New Hampstead's playoff run concludes in a dramatic finish.

The Jenkins High School flag football team clinched a hard-fought 7-6 overtime victory against Lakeside-Evans on Monday evening, advancing to the GHSA Division 2 semifinals. The game, held at Savannah High, marked a significant achievement for Jenkins (17-2), which will now face Greenbrier this Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Savannah High’s stadium.

The Warriors’ winning touchdown in overtime came from a 10-yard run by A’Niyah Browner, followed by a one-point conversion pass from quarterback I’Yarna Lee to Ke’Ara Jones. Defensively, Eden Bullard sealed the victory by breaking up Lakeside-Evans’ conversion attempt, prompting cheers from her teammates.

Jenkins’ head coach, Brianna Brooker, praised her team’s resilience in the rain-soaked game. Highlighting the importance of teamwork, junior standout Browner emphasized the group’s chemistry as a key factor in their success. The Warriors have had a historic season, dominating the D2-Area 3 standings and showcasing individual talents like Browner and Lee, both recognized as top players in their region.

Meanwhile, New Hampstead High School endured a heartbreaking triple-overtime loss to Evans, 13-12, in their Division 2 quarterfinal matchup. Despite a strong defensive effort, including interceptions by Mila Cramer and Deja Willis, the Phoenix fell short on their final two-point attempt in the third overtime.

New Hampstead’s coach, Trey Lanier, reflected on his decision-making during the intense game, noting the risks and rewards of their offensive strategy. The Phoenix concluded their season with a 16-2 record, having relied on their adaptable defense and standout players like Area 3 Defensive Player of the Year Gianna Brown.

As the GHSA flag football playoffs continue, Jenkins’ semifinal matchup against Greenbrier promises another exciting contest. The Warriors remain focused as they aim for a spot in the championship game.
