Snow on the Beach: Winter Storm Freezes Savannah and Surrounding Areas
Southeast Georgia experiences snow, ice, and freezing temperatures as a rare winter storm disrupts daily life.

A powerful winter storm has arrived in southeast Georgia, bringing snow, ice, and frigid temperatures to the region. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Savannah and neighboring areas until noon on Wednesday, as snow and sleet accumulate across the region.

Snowfall began Tuesday evening around 6 p.m., with a wintry mix expected to continuing overnight before tapering off early Wednesday morning. The winter storm disrupted air travel at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. According to Lori Lynah, Senior Director of Marketing and Air Service Development, over 20 arriving flights and several departures were canceled on Tuesday. Travelers planning to fly over the next few days are advised to check with their airlines for updates as weather conditions may lead to further delays or cancellations.

Local officials have also announced changes to public services. Savannah’s sanitation services, already delayed by Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, will be suspended on Wednesday. Residents are encouraged to check the updated collection schedule for later in the week.

In addition, school administrators in Bryan and Effingham counties canceled classes on Wednesday to ensure the safety of students and staff. Chatham County has declared a state of emergency in response to the storm, with leaders coordinating efforts to address potential hazards caused by snow and freezing rain.

Residents are urged to remain cautious on icy roads and stay informed through official channels as the winter storm progresses.
