Trump-Harris Debate: Start Time, Rules, and Everything You Need to Know
Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump will face off in their first - and possibly only - debate tonight.

With just 55 days to go until Election Day, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are set to debate tonight at 9 p.m. ET in Philadelphia. The 90-minute exchange, which is expected to influence undecided voters, is their only currently scheduled face-to-face confrontation before the election on November 5th.

How to Watch

The Harris-Trump debate will be broadcast live starting at 9 p.m. ET across ABC channel and will stream free via their website and app. It will also be available to watch on Disney+ and Hulu. PBS will also provide live coverage at the same time. Other news outlets are expected to air the debate as well.

Moderators, Format, and Rules

ABC News personalities David Muir, host of ABC World News Tonight, and Linsey Davis, who anchors the same program on Sundays, are moderating tonight’s debate. They will guide the discussion and ensure the rules are followed. A point of contention between the two campaigns, the following format and rules have been agreed upon:

  • Each candidate will have two minutes to respond to the questions, with another two minutes allotted for rebuttals, and an additional minute for clarifications or follow-ups.
  • While one candidate is speaking, the other candidate’s microphone will be turned off.
  • There will be no opening statements and closing remarks are limited to two minutes.
  • Candidates must stand behind their podiums for the entirety of the debate.
  • Neither candidate is allowed to bring props or prewritten notes on stage with them.
  • Topics and questions have not been provided to either candidate in advance.
  • Candidates are prohibited from asking each other questions during the debate.

Following a virtual coin toss, former President Trump chose to go second for closing remarks and Vice President Harris chose the right-hand position on the stage.

With just over seven weeks left until Election Day, tonight’s debate could possibly be the only one between Harris and Trump as another has yet to be scheduled.
